An unusual one today on this Nissan NV200.
The vehicle was booked in for condenser replacement having already been checked at the Nissan dealer and the owner told that there was a hole in the condenser caused by stone damage so not covered under warranty.
After removing the front bumper and condenser I found a bolt laid on the plastic undertray, I knew it wasn't one I had removed so looked to see where it had come from.
It was a perfect fit for the damage on the old condenser so obviously was thrown up from the road and went straight through the grille in the lower section of the bumper.
New condenser fitted and recharged the Aircon so the system is back to full operation again.

I seem to be spending half my week trying to locate small leaks on car air conditioning systems lately.

Most of these jobs have already had an aircon recharge done at a garage or fast fit centre, some even on a cheap Groupon deal.
It either hasn't lasted long before the aircon went off again or the customer was told the car had a leak but they couldn't find it or didn't have the equipment to test the system.

If your cars air conditioning isn't working and the system is empty it should be pressure tested first to make sure it has no leaks, it is illegal to put refrigerant gas into a known leaking system.
So if it's empty it probably has a leak.

Fully automatic machines are mainly used by garages to carry out aircon recharge service, the machine will do a vacuum on the system and hold it for a few minutes.
If it doesn't drop the vacuum too much over that time it will gas the system up ( It doesn't have to not drop the vacuum at all, it just needs to not drop too much too fast).
Your air conditioning system works under very high pressure so a vacuum test is not really going to find those small pinhole leaks.
You will probably be told there were no leaks found by the machine and off you go with nice cool air conditioning only to find in a matter of days or weeks you are back to having no aircon.

Unfortunately this is when I get the phone call after the customer has already spent money or had the job done again with no success.

If I attend a car with a completely empty system I will always do a leak test by pressurising the system using nitrogen/hydrogen mix to try and trace leaks.

It's wasting money filling a leaking system and releasing harmful refrigerant into the air.

Get the job done properly.

Nissan Qashqai for the new R1234yf gas recharge in Darlington this morning.
Unfortunately this one had a leaking condenser radiator, not to worry it's that common on these new qashai's that I stock the part.
New condenser fitted and system recharged so back to nice cool air again.

Not many places can do the new R1234yf gas service yet they can only service the early type systems.

Here's another Mini that has been regassed twice recently with apparently no leaks showing up.
This one turned out to be a leaking condenser radiator, so out with the old unit and a new one fitted then recharged.
Back to having nice cool Aircon and all carried out at the customers home.
This is the fifth condenser replacement I've done this week with more booked for next week already.

This Mini Cooper has been in a garage twice to have the air conditioning recharged within a few weeks, both times they have told the customer there was no leaks but the aircon stopped working again very soon.
Out of frustration the owner contacted me to carry out a leak test on the car to identify what the problem was, within a few minutes of pressurising the system with nitrogen the leak was found to be on an aluminium pipe from the compressor.
The pipe had been rubbing against another hose and had eventually worn a pin hole in the air conditioning pipe.
The reason this wasn't found by the garage is that most places use an automatic machine that does a vacuum leak test, this isn't really an effective way of leak testing as your air conditioning runs at a very high pressure not a vacuum. That's why if I attend a vehicle with an empty air conditioning system it always gets pressure tested first before wasting time, money and gas recharging a leaking system.
A new pipe was ordered and I returned today to fit the part and recharged the system bringing cool air once again for the driver.
